Remain Apple of God’s Eye for Absolute Protection

Remain Apple of God’s Eye for Absolute Protection

Consider the following text:

Zechariah 2:8-9  For this is what the Lord Almighty says: “After the Glorious One has sent me against the nations that have plundered you—for whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye—I will surely raise my hand against them so that their slaves will plunder them. g Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me.

Zechariah wrote the prophecy in this text when all Israel were in exile in Babylon.  God had allowed Babylon to subdue Judah after Israel’s conquest by Assyria as discipline for their apostasy. Babylon, however, went beyond discipline and exacted punishment by totally destroying and plundering the nation.  After a period of time God had compassion on all Israel (Judah included) and sent his archangel to make this proclamation in our passage through Zechariah.

So, in verse 8 of our passage God declared through the archangel that Israel is the apple of his eye.  Babylon’s action of destroying and plundering Israel means that they have touched the apple of his eye.  Then in verse 9 he says that he is about to unleash his wrath upon Babylon for that reason.  For destroying, plundering, and enslaving Israel God was sending his archangel to destroy Babylon and allow the enslaved Jews to plunder Babylon.  That is, because they have touched the apple of his eye he is turning the tables on them.

As an apple of God’s eye, may God turn the tables on your enemies!

1       Consequence for touching the apple of God’s eye

The “apple of the eye” is the pupil – the black, brown, green, or blue part of the eye at the center of the eye.  It is the most sensitive part of the eye that is susceptible to pain.  It is easy for you to touch the white of your eye but not the pupil.  If anyone tries to poke their finger into your eye you will have a natural reflex action to bat off their finger.  So, “apple of your eye” is an idiom that means something that is most precious to you; a prized possession that enjoys your utmost protection and preservation.

The phrase “Whoever touches you touches the apple of God’s eye” means that you are so precious to God that if anyone touches you slightly God considers it as a great offense against him.  Consequently, he will take the most serious action against the perpetrator.

So, this passage speaks about the past, present, and future.  Israel’s present condition of being an oppressed people is as a result of what has happened in the past through the destruction and plundering by Babylon.  The promise for the future is that what happened in the past will be reversed on their oppressors.  Babylon touched the apple of God’s eye by touching Israel and that has brought pain to Israel and hence to God himself.  Consequently, God will inflict the same pain on Babylon.  In effect God was promising that he will reverse the oppressor of the past to become the oppressed of the future.  God will reverse the destroyer of the past to become the destroyed of the future.  God will reverse the plunderer of the past to become the plundered.

May God reverse your lot from oppressed to oppressor of your enemies!

Only those who are truly an apple of God’s eye are entitled to his utmost protection and all these prophetic declarations.

So, who is considered to be the apple of God’s eye?

2       Those who are the apple of God’s eye

To answer this question consider three categories of People: (1) Totally Christian Person, (2) Totally Satanic Person, and (3) Neutral Person.

2.1     Totally Christian Person

To become a Totally Christian Person requires that you totally surrender to God by yielding control of your affairs to God and submitting to God’s authority.  This means you give up control of yourself, your will, your worldly habits, and your worldly worldview.  Then you rededicate yourself to focus on the things of God by zealously practicing the spiritual disciplines of prayer, fasting, Bible study, and meditation.  You adopt a Biblical worldview and a Christ-based sense of being.

As a Totally Christian Person you are the apple of God’s eye.  As a quid pro quo, God expects you to continuously make the Word the apple of your eye as stated in Proverbs 7:2:  “Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.”

May you totally surrender to God and become an apple of his eye!

As an apple of God’s eye, God vigorously defends you.  That is why he says, “No weapon formed against them can prosper” because any weapon formed against you is formed against the apple of God’s eye.  Since God is omnipotent no one can touch the apple of God’s eye!  No Occultic power can overcome you.

Proverbs 26:2 says, “Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse does not come to rest.”  As an apple of God’s eye, when someone curses you it will not take effect but rather the curse will be reversed and go back on the person.

David knew the great benefits of being the Apple of God’s eye and so in Psalm 17:8-9 he prayed to God saying, “Keep me as the Apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings 9 from the wicked who assail me, from my mortal enemies who surround me.”

May you pray David’s prayer always! May you totally surrender to God and become an apple of his eye!

2.2     Totally Satanic Person

A Totally Satanic Person is a person who has deliberately surrendered himself to Satan and is either a Satan worshipper or idol worshipper.  Some are open about their allegiance to Satan and somewhat evangelistic about it.  They have spiritual power derived from Satan and use that power to promote Satan’s purpose, which is to steal and kill and destroy and to take many people to hell.

Totally Satanic People have varying levels of Satanic power.  It is a miserable thing to be a Totally Satanic Person because you are always subject to becoming a victim of the “steal, kill, and destroy” agenda by a higher powered Satanic Person.

Totally Satanic People already know they are not the apple of God’s eye. So, I call on you also to make a commitment today in order to become an apple of God’s eye to be able to successfully go through 2016.

May you totally surrender to God and become an apple of his eye!

2.3     Neutral Person

A Neutral person is a person who is either a carnal Christian, an unsaved churchgoer, or an agnostic.  If you’ve not been dedicated to God and his Word, if you’ve back-slid, if you’ve not desired the things of God – prayer, Bible study, church service, if you don’t come to church because your spouse, or family member, or church member has upset you then you’re operating as a Neutral Person.

A Neutral Person is not empowered by God and not empowered by Satan.  So, they are completely vulnerable to successful attack by a Totally Satanic Person.

When a Neutral Person who is a carnal Christian or unsaved churchgoer gets spiritually attacked they sometimes run to God in prayer or go to a pastor or prophet for prayers.  But God doesn’t answer such prayers as stated in Proverbs 28:9: “If anyone turns a deaf ear to my instruction, even their prayers are detestable.”  Any curse issued against a Neutral Person will take effect.  Any weapons formed against a Neutral Person will work against them.  They are like a sitting duck ready to be shot at easily.

As a Neutral person you’re not an apple of God’s eye.  You need to make a commitment today to become a Totally Christian Person in order to become an apple of God’s eye and be eligible for his protection.

May you totally surrender to God and become an apple of his eye!

3       Conclusion

One morning in the 1950’s as I walked to the marketplace in a village called Bosuso in Ghana I saw a fresh carcass of an animal that indicated that it was mauled in the previous night.  So, I asked my cousin who had lived in the village all his life what that was and what happened.  He told me that it was a carcass of a goat mauled by foxes.  He explained that a shepherd usually gathers his goats together at night and keeps them in a pen to protect them from predator animals roaming about the village looking for prey.  So after lockdown, the rebellious goat must have escaped the pen to enjoy his freedom and thus became prey for foxes.  The goat had left the protection of the shepherd and the pen and suffered the disastrous consequence.

If you’re not an apple of God’s eye then you’re subject to a fate similar to the goat.  Carefully consider your ways and make a serious commitment to become a Totally Christian Person.

May you totally surrender to God and become an apple of his eye!
